Understanding Your Roofing System
A high-quality roof is a complete system โ not just the visible outer layer. Every component plays a critical role in protecting your Houston home from heat, rain, wind, and moisture. Here's what goes into a properly installed roofing system.
Key Roof System Components
- Roof Deck (Sheathing) โ Typically 7/16" or 15/32" OSB or plywood. The structural foundation everything is attached to.
- Ice & Water Shield โ Self-adhering membrane installed at eaves, valleys, and penetrations. Critical in Houston for leak prevention during heavy rain events.
- Synthetic Underlayment โ Breathable, water-resistant layer between deck and shingles. Superior to traditional felt paper.
- Drip Edge โ Metal flashing along eaves and rakes to direct water into gutters and away from fascia.
- Starter Shingles โ Adhesive-back shingles at eaves and rakes to prevent blow-off of first course.
- Field Shingles / Primary Material โ The main roofing surface (asphalt, metal, tile, etc.).
- Hip & Ridge Cap โ Specialized shingles or metal pieces covering the peak of the roof.
- Flashing โ Metal pieces sealing joints around chimneys, skylights, vents, and walls.
- Ventilation System โ Ridge vents, soffit vents, or power ventilators to maintain proper airflow and extend roof life in Houston's heat.
