Tesla stopped taking Solar Roof orders in August 2026. What that means if you have one on your Houston home, or were planning one.
Tesla has discontinued its Solar Roof. On August 20, 2026, Electrek reported that Tesla had told its certified installers the solar roof tiles could no longer be ordered, and Tesla’s Solar Roof web page now sends visitors to its solar panels page. Tesla has made no public statement.
If you own a Houston-area home with a Tesla Solar Roof, or had one planned, this page covers what the news means for your warranty, storm damage and repairs, and what your options are. It is built from Tesla’s own warranty document and from what installers told the trade press.

Tesla has not explained the decision. On August 20, 2026, Electrek reported, citing two sources close to the program, that Tesla told its certified third-party installers the tiles were no longer available to order and that it would supply only conventional solar panels. One source told Electrek that “Tesla has concluded that the product is not financially viable.”
A day later, TechCrunch confirmed that the Solar Roof web address and its support pages now redirect to Tesla’s general solar page. Two installers told TechCrunch they were still offering the product, which suggests remaining stock is being sold.
The product was never common. Tesla stopped reporting Solar Roof installation numbers in early 2024, and Electrek cites a Wood Mackenzie estimate of about 3,000 systems installed in the US in total.
On September 1, 2026, Roofing Contractor reported what installers were hearing. Several said Tesla told them existing installations will keep receiving warranty and service support, and one said Tesla told his company replacement parts will remain available. Another installer questioned how easily storm-damaged or replacement tiles will be found in five to ten years.
Your warranty is the most important document you own about the roof. Here is what Tesla’s current published US warranty says. Older installations may carry an earlier version, so check the one in your own paperwork.
| Term | What the warranty says |
|---|---|
| Product | Free from defects in design and materials for 25 years from installation. |
| Keeping water out | The roof will stay in place and keep wind and rain out of the home for 25 years. In the first 10 years Tesla repairs, replaces or compensates. In years 11 to 25 it pays a shrinking share of material costs only (60% in year 11, 4% less each year after) and no labor. |
| Power output | At least 95% of rated power at year 5, then a decline of no more than 0.5% a year for the next 20 years. |
| Not covered | The installer’s workmanship, materials the installer supplied (such as underlayment), and the inverter and other power electronics, which have their own warranty. |
| Weather | Excluded: lightning, flood, hail, wind gusts above 139 miles per hour, and “other extreme weather events.” |
| Near the coast | Excluded: corrosion if the roof is within 1,500 feet of salt water, salt spray or salt fog. |
| Repairs by others | Excluded: problems caused by someone other than Tesla installing, removing, re-installing or repairing the Solar Roof. |
| Maintenance | Routine maintenance in the Owner’s Manual is required and not covered. |
| If you sell | A later owner of the home can make claims by providing proof of ownership. |
| Disputes | Individual arbitration, or small claims court. |
Tesla no longer takes orders. If an installer still offers one from remaining stock, get in writing that tiles for your whole roof, plus spares for future repairs, are already secured before you sign. Roofing Contractor reports that installers with projects lacking secured material are converting them to conventional solar panels or canceling them.
The installers Roofing Contractor spoke with drew the same lesson. One advised weighing “long-term support, availability of materials and stability of the manufacturer” before committing to a proprietary roofing system. With that in mind, the main options are:

Installers told Roofing Contractor the Solar Roof was a demanding product to install and maintain. One said a conventional rack-mounted solar job takes about two days, while a Solar Roof project could take two weeks or longer. Another said troubleshooting the system is substantially harder than conventional solar because of the number of electrical connections, and that service will carry “a much higher labor cost.” Installers also described Tesla requiring roughly two weeks of training on the West Coast, at the contractor’s expense, before certification.
With few systems installed and no new ones being sold, the number of crews trained to work on them is unlikely to grow. That is one more reason to keep your records in order and to deal with Tesla in writing.
Electrek, “Tesla discontinues its Solar Roof tiles, not economically viable” (August 20, 2026); TechCrunch, “Tesla’s solar roof is dead — here’s what went wrong” (August 21, 2026); Roofing Contractor, “Tesla Solar Roof Exit Leaves Contractors Facing Costs, Service Questions” (September 1, 2026); Tesla, Solar Roof Limited Warranty (USA), effective May 28, 2021.
Yes. On August 20, 2026, Electrek reported that Tesla had told its certified installers the solar roof tiles could no longer be ordered, and Tesla’s Solar Roof web page now redirects to its solar panels page. Tesla has not made a public statement about it.
The warranty is part of your contract, and ending sales does not end it. Installers told Roofing Contractor that Tesla said it will keep honoring warranties and supplying replacement parts. Tesla has not said so publicly, so keep your paperwork and report any problem to Tesla in writing.
No. Tesla’s 2021 US Solar Roof warranty excludes hail, lightning, flood, wind gusts above 139 miles per hour and other extreme weather events. Storm damage is a question for your homeowners insurance.
Not without risking the warranty. Tesla’s warranty excludes problems caused by someone other than Tesla installing, removing, re-installing or repairing the Solar Roof. Contact Tesla first.
